Not Looking Your Best May Cost You Your Job!

These are very scary economic time but it just amazes me how people are acting like their jobs are as secure as they were two years ago. I don’t know about you, but in my neck of the woods, unemployment is at an all time high. I have so many friends and acquaintances have been laid off!

In these days, we “women in the middle” need to be even more vigilant about what we are projecting- in our attitude, our work ethic and our dress. One of the areas that surprise me is how women dress for work. Have we gotten too casual? Is every day a casual Friday?

I often see women wearing shapeless tops over shapeless pants with elastic waists or outfits that show way too much skin- looking more like weekend wear than work attire. What about those people who wear wrinkled clothing? It makes them look like they rushed to grab something out of the laundry basket just before they ran out the door that morning.

Your clothes say so much about you. Take a hard look at your self in the mirror. Does it say “Confident, competent professional”? Or “ You do what for a living?!”

In today’s times where jobs are scarce and a first impression is sometimes all you get, make sure you have considered every aspect of your look. One solution is making sure your tops and shirts are professional looking. Don’t show too much skin! Don’t be too trendy! Just be tailored and, if you really want to be remembered, add a little shot of color or pattern. Finally, take time on Sunday night to choose the next weeks outfits, making sure they are ironed, clean and project the image that you want the world to see.
